Why we buy directly from smallholder cooperatives

Guaranteed offtake, agronomy support and fair pricing produce better raw material — and a supply base that lasts.

Buying through layers of middlemen is convenient, and it is also how quality problems become invisible. When you cannot trace a bag back to a field, you cannot fix what went wrong in it.

We contract directly with smallholder clusters across the rice and cassava belts. Farmers get a guaranteed offtake agreement before planting, access to improved planting material and support with drying practice — the single largest source of avoidable quality loss.

In return we get raw material we can trace, and a planting decision that is made with our specification already in mind.

It is a slower way to build a supply base. It is also the only version of it that survives a difficult season.
