What actually makes parboiled rice premium
Grain length, moisture, chalkiness and destoning — the four measurements that separate a premium mill run from an ordinary one.
Premium is not a label you print on a bag. In parboiled rice it is a set of measurable outcomes: consistent grain length, moisture held within a narrow band, a low share of chalky and broken grains, and a destoning result that leaves nothing behind.
Parboiling itself — soaking, steaming and drying paddy before milling — pushes nutrients from the bran into the endosperm and hardens the kernel so it survives milling intact. Done carelessly, it discolours the grain and leaves an off aroma. Done precisely, it produces a firm, separate, clean-tasting grain that holds its shape on the plate.
At Platemate every production run is sampled at intake, after drying and after final polishing. Moisture is held at 12–14%, grain length is graded, and each batch carries a certificate that our industrial partners can file against their own quality systems.
That paper trail matters more than any marketing claim. It is what allows a bakery, a caterer or a distributor to plan a season around a supply line rather than hope for one.
